Alaska Medical Missions (AMM) is a ministry that connects resources in the United States with urgent needs for medical supplies and other aid in developing areas all over the world. AMM operates primarily with donated inventory. These materials come from military hospitals, manufacturers, private medical facilities and individuals. Volunteers sort the incoming material and prepare it to go out with humanitarian and youth programs traveling to regions with severe shortages.
Proyecto Fe has partnered with AMM by bringing totes of medicals supplies to Guatemala. In lieu of personal baggage, short term mission trip participants have been bringing medical supplies to Guatemala for several years. In 2005, Proyecto Fe missionaries brought 2,803 pounds of medical supplies to Guatemala. And in 2008, we were able to transport an additional 1,150 pounds of supplies.
Proyecto Fe is working with Alaska Medical Missions to fly down a large cargo plane of medical instruments, medical equipment & much needed supplies to Guatemala. AMM received approval to send up to 100,000 pounds and the United States government will fly the shipment down as soon as the pallets are packed, inventoried and loaded. This shipment will bring much needed medical equipment as well as supplies to many areas in Guatemala.
Volunteer are needed to help pack & inventory items that will be shipped to Guatemala. In 2009, 40 foot containers filled with supplies will be going to, Kenya, Guatemala, and the Phillipines. The containers are filled with 20 pallets and are valued at $190,000. If you are going with a medical team or know of medical needs around the world, AMM can and is willing to help supply these needs. AMM is looking for youth groups or teams to help pack, sort and identify donnated goods. They are also looking for teams to help transport supplies. Call for more information.
In Amercia, we are throwing away the blessings God pours out on us. Our garbage can be a big blessing to others. We need to see this as the right thing to do. The surplus from our health system could be used to heal patients and help physicians in the poorest, most desperate parts of the world. The problem is gathering it together and getting to where it is needed. In the United States each year, fully functional medical items valued at more than $200 million are directed to landfills or incinerators. At the same time, over 1.2 billion people in the world live on $1 a day. Hundreds of millions suffer from chronic hunger and severe lack of medical supplies. AMM has sent 710 shipments of medical supplies and other humanitarian aid to more than 80 countries.
