Letter Guidelines & Suggestions
1. Keep it simple, write about things your sponsored child will understand such as family, pets, hobbies and activities. Encourage your child’s learning activities and relationship with the Lord.
2. Emphasize things you have in common. As time goes on, you’ll discover shared interest, such as school subjects, music, or activities. Common interest will enhance the child’s self-esteem; your significance in the life of your sponsored child will have an impact on his/her view of themselves. Please avoid discussing material possessions, which may emphasize differences.
3. Send a photo of yourself and your family. Such pictures will become one of your sponsored child’s prize possessions. Due to differences in cultures, please dress modestly (beach attire may not be suitable) and double check the content of the photo for anything that may stir negative emotions in another culture. Due to the recent (a little over 10 years) militant history of Guatemala, photos with toy or real guns will be returned to the sponsor.
4. Send a postcard of where you live and places you have visited. Postcards are a fun (and educational). For your family’s privacy, please do not include your specific home or work address in your correspondence.
5. Consider including a flat, paper item that we can forward with your letter. Such as a photo, bookmark, stickers, and/or postcards.
6. Please do not send communication that is inconsistent with the Christian values we share with our partnering churches. We minister to children in the context of local churches that share a common evangelical statement of faith. Please do not send communication or material that are inconsistent with evangelical Christian values. Please visit www.proyectofe.org for more information on our ministry and mission statement.
